Causes Of International Bank Crisis Involving Less...
Emily Atchison Nicole Popp Jared Rizzo Michele Rudolph Team 3 HW_2 End of Chapter Problems Chapter 11: â⬠¢ #5 The causes of the international bank crisis involving less developed countries (LDC) can be traced to the largest international banks concentrated lending to sovereign governments of some LDC s and the lack of cautious expansion into unfamiliar activities. The root cause was oil. Because the price of oil dramatically increased, OPEC accumulated lots of US Dollars. These dollars were then lent by large banks to LDCs to generate interest income and the cycle continued until the tight monetary policies led to high inflation which eventually caused a global recession and LDCs could not meet their debt obligations. The solution to this crisis came from US Secretary Nicholas Brady and offered three options to creditor banks. The three options were to: 1. Convert their loans to marketable bonds with a face value equal to 65 percent of the original loan amount 2. Convert the loans into collateralized bonds with a reduced interest rate 6.5% (which extending the debt maturities y 25 or 30 year s and the purchase by the debtor nation of zero coupon US Treasury bonds with a corresponding maturity to guarantee the bonds and make them marketableââ¬âthese were nicknamed the Brady bonds or 3. Lend additional funds to allow the debtor nation to get on their feet. Most LDCs chose the Brady bond option and over $100 billion in bank debt had been converted to Brady bonds. â⬠¢ DetroitShow MoreRelatedThe Hardships Hitting Least Developed Countries1627 Words à |à 6 PagesIntroduction: Developed countries are countries which obtain a great level of income and are also referred to as industrialised countries. Financial Ratio Analysis Qantas Airways Limited
Question: Discuss about the Financial Ratio Analysis for Qantas Airways Limited. Answer: Introduction: Currently Qantas looks in good financial shape courtesy of two good financial years starting from June 2014 and continuing till to date. As per their annual report 2016, they registered healthy profits of 1.53 billion AUD for the year 2016, reported EPS of 49.4 cents per share. Both of these were huge improvements over the 2015 figures in excess of 50%, the figures in 2015 themselves being an improvement over 2014 figures. Their total debt stands at 5.6 billion AUD well within their target range of 4.8 to 6 billion AUD. The operating cash flow stands at a healthy 2.8 billion AUD. ROIC increased to 23% as well.(Qantas, 2016) However, alls not rosy. At the time of writing this report their stocks current market price is 3.15 AUD as per ASX website. One would imagine that in wake of the recent performance this airline stock would have seen a fair appreciation in its market price. But actually thats not the case as the stock has in fact seen a decline in its price almost upto 26% from last year as chronicled in details in an earlier section of this paper.(King, 2016) Dividing that by the EPS it gives the P/E ratio as 6.5. Thats fairly low for an economy like Australia where its normal to have companies with PE ratio above 15 with some ratios in mid-30s to 40s as well. By that measure one can say that right now Qantas is perceived as a cheap stock and not one which instils a lot of confidence among share-holders in spite of excellent financial results for two years in a row. (Gottwald, 2012) The book value per share is $1.7 which is approximately 0.55 times of the market value. Hence in that sense it doesnt look overpriced as a book-market value of 1 indicates at a stock being overpriced. In this regard Qantas might look at achieving parity between the two measures so it looks a more balanced buy to potential investors. That can be achieved by reducing the dividend payments and adding on the retained earnings. What it would do is increase the book value of the stock. One more problematic ratio for Qantas is that their current ratio currently stands at approximately 0.5 which is a fall from their 2015 figure of 0.7 and this is one area where Qantas can seek improvement.(Bajkowsi, 1999) The current ratio is obtained by dividing the current liabilities with the current assets. One way of doing that can be keeping some cash reserves which currently are a 1000 million AUD less than the corresponding figure of 2015. A current ratio of less than 1 for any industry might be problematic because very simply it indicates that the current assets and liquidity positions are not even enough to take care of the current liabilities. What they wouldnt want is to become so cash deprived that it might disrupt their normal day to day operations. References Bajkowsi, J. (1999). Financial Ratio Analysis: Putting The Numbers To Work. To The Lighthouse By Virginia Woolf Transcending Death Essays
To The Lighthouse By Virginia Woolf : Transcending Death Transcending Death in To the Lighthouse The greatest obstacle to identifying a purpose for human life is the inevitability of death. Why should a human being strive for any goal when death will always be the final result of his striving, and after death he will be oblivious to any positive or negative effects of his lifetime actions? Virginia Woolf tackles this dilemma in her novel To the Lighthouse by presenting characters who attempt to transcend death either through accomplishments in art and science, or by nurturing other human beings. Mr. Ramsay and Charles Tansley take the path of intellectual accomplishment; Mrs. Ramsay represents the path of human nurturing. Although the characters derive some comfort from their efforts to transcend death, they are also tormented by the fear that they will not succeed in their strivings, and come to doubt that successful transcendence is even possible. Woolf never resolves this conflict in the novel. Instead, she maintains an ambivalence, illustrating both the benefits and the pitfalls of the two transcendence strategies. The dilemma of transcending death has traditionally been answered through belief in a God who can grant salvation. Christianity promises its believers that if they strive for salvation, they can avoid death and enjoy eternal life. To the Lighthouse is distinctly modern in that God is rejected outright: How could any Lord have made this world? Mrs. Ramsay asks herself, concluding that the world is too full of suffering to have been created by a divine savior (64). None of the other characters base their hopes for transcending death on divine salvation either; they consistently strive for results in this world. To the Lighthouse includes two characters who attempt to transcend death through intellectual accomplishments: Mr. Ramsay and Charles Tansley, both of whom are philosophers. The predominance of intellectuals in Virginia Woolf's novel could be explained by her own life in the British intelligentsia. However, intellectual endeavors are essentially the same as other human endeavors in their risks and rewards. It may be that Woolf was simply writing about those endeavors which she knew best, but intended her points to be much more widely applicable. Woolf makes explicit comparisons to more traditionally heroic kinds of accomplishment in describing Mr. Ramsay's struggle to analyze his degree of intellectual success: Qualities that would have saved a ship's company exposed on a broiling sea with six biscuits and a flask of water--endurance and justice, foresight, devotion, skill, came to his help...Qualities that in a desolate expedition across the icy solitudes of the Polar region would have made him the leader, the guide, the counsellor, whose temper, neither sanguine nor despondent, surveys with equanimity what is to be and faces it, came to his help again...Feelings that would not have disgraced a leader who, now that the snow has begun to fall and the mountain top is covered in mist, knows that he must lay himself down and die before morning comes, stole upon him... (34-35) The hope of transcendence for people who endeavor in any field, whether it is art, science, politics, business, war or exploration, lies in achieving recognition for their accomplishments. If they do great work, they tell themselves, they will be remembered by future generations and thus achieve a measure of immortality. But all endeavors are inherently risky; one can never be sure how well one will succeed, or how much one's peers and posterity will notice. Mr. Ramsay expresses his desire to transcend death through intellectual accomplishment most clearly in his lengthy mental soliloquy on levels of achievement. He uses the analogy of an alphabet, in which people advance from A toward Z as they achieve greater intellectual feats. He reached Q. Very few people in the whole of England ever reach Q, thinks Mr. Ramsay, proud of his current achievements but acutely aware of how far he still has to go (33). His next thought is full of doubt about his ability to succeed: A shutter, like the leathern eyelid of a lizard, flickered over the intensity of his gaze and obscured the letter R. In that flash of darkness he heard people saying--he was a failure--that R was beyond him. He would never reach R. On to R, once more. R-- (34) The flash of darkness initiated by the closing of the lizard's eye is a symbol of death, reinforced by the ancient association between reptiles and denial of salvation. It is also significant that Mr. Ramsay
